Demonetisation: Amit Shah slams those critical of currency ban, claims black money reduced to scrap

Azamgarh: Hitting out at the parties criticising the Centre's demonetisation decision, BJP president Amit Shah on Thursday said they are only "exposing themselves", as anyone who is clean has no reason to oppose the move.
"BJP leaders are not worried with this [demonetisation] move. Those who have black money, they are rattled. If they are clean then why they are opposing this move?
"Mayawati, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Mamata, Communists, Kejriwal... all are raising hue and cry [over demonetisation]. Why are you all crying foul? Why are you exposing yourself before the public?" he told BJP's parivartan yatra rally in SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav's Lok Sabha constituency.
File photo of Amit Shah. Reuters
"Akhilesh bhai [Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav]... what are you concerned about? We did not have black money so there is no question of it going away. In just one stroke, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rendered the notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 useless," Shah said in his typical style.
He said all the money with terrorists, drug mafia, naxals and corrupt black marketeers has been reduced to mere scrap.
"People have to stand in queues and we too are concerned... when big decisions are taken they give some problems but it makes the lives of others happy," Shah said, adding this (step) will bring down inflation and check black marketing and all fake currency notes from Pakistan will become useless.
With demonetisation creating hardships to the people in the middle of marriage and sowing seasons, the BJP chief said the prime minister today allowed withdrawals up to Rs 2.5 lakh for weddings and up to Rs 50,000 for farmers.
Besides, farmers who have taken crop loan or have Kisan Credit Card can withdraw Rs 25,000 per week.
The BJP president said Uttar Pradesh needs a government which can make the state the most prosperous in the country.
"The law and order situation is so bad that crime graph is at an all time high...SP and BSP cannot develop the state... only BJP government can develop Uttar Pradesh," he said.
Stating that land mafias were having a field day during the SP government, Shah warned that if his party comes to power, none of them (land mafias) will be spared.
Asserting that the government avenged the Uri attack on soldiers by killing the terrorists in their home, Shah said this act of bravery was termed as 'Khoon Ki Dalali' by Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi.
"Pakistan backed terrorists in a coward act killed our armymen in Uri. But we did not sit idle, we gave them befitting reply by killing terrorists in their home..and Rahul Gandhi termed it as 'khoon ki dalali'," Shah said.
Speaking about the various policy initiatives taken by the Modi government for uplift of poor and backward sections of the society, Shah said government launched schemes but the uncle-nephew government of Uttar Pradesh government is not implementing them.
He also spoke at length on Modi government's contribution in Uttar Pradesh, achievements of central government, surgical strikes and schemes for the poor, farmers, women, youth, backward, scheduled castes and villages.

Akhilesh Yadav distributes ration cards bearing his photo, Opposition objects

Akhilesh Yadav distributes ration cards bearing his photo, Opposition objects

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday launched a programme for distributing new ration cards bearing his photograph and name, which the rival parties dubbed as a "cheap political gimmick" in view of the Assembly polls due next year.
He, however, sought to downplay the issue, saying it was important for people to know who was working for them.

File photo of CM Akhilesh Yadav. PTI
"Under the National Food Security Act, 3.15 crore ration cards have been printed. The Act was implemented in the state on 1 March. Under it, those having 'Antyoday' cards will be given 35 kg food grains, while 'Grasthi' card holders will get 5 kg food grains per month," he said at the programme at his official residence.
"People may question why there is a photograph of the Chief Minister on the bag of ration or on the ration card. If we are helping the poor, there should be some publicity of it. It is important for people to know who is working for them," he said.
BJP and Congress denounced the SP government's move to put the Chief Minister's photograph on the new ration cards.
"The CM should not have put his photo on the ration cards. It has been done in view of the Assembly polls," Congress state unit Vice President Satyadev Tripathi said.
BJP said it was a Central government scheme. "Putting the Chief Minister's photo on ration cards is objectionable. It's a cheap publicity gimmick for political gains," party spokesman Harish Chandra Srivastava said.

India vs New Zealand

India vs New Zealand: Trent Boult says Kane Williamson going through 'tough time' as captain

New Zealand seamer Trent Boult today said that it will be difficult to find a charismatic leader like Brendon McCullum while admitting that current skipper Kane Williamson is going "through pretty tough time" as a captain.
Asked to compare the two, Boult gave an elaborate explanation.
New Zealand bowler Trent Boult. AFP
"Kane is a classy player and has been ranked as a top batsman for a reason. In a way, he has had pretty tough time walking into the role of captaincy. It has been a learning experience for the whole team to be honest. The way Brendon led the team, I don't think anyone could do it as well as he did it. He set his own tone, we all know what kind of explosive batsman, he is. But we are stacked up with lot of quality players in the side and we need all of them to stand up and put in good performance," Boult said.
While he did not want to point fingers at any particular batsmen, he said that a collective effort is needed from them after an indifferent tour so far.
"As a unit, we are looking to get more runs. If we get more runs on the board, we can put more scoreboard pressure on a good Indian side. I am not going to single anyone out in terms of performance, but they should contribute with the bat, bowl and in the field. Try and put in more energy," Boult said on the eve of the second one-dayer at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium here tomorrow.
Boult said that the quality of spin bowling that they encountered during the Test series is something that they are not used to.
Asked if Ravichandran Ashwin's effect is still bothering the Kiwi batsmen, Boult said: "I am not too sure about that. Indians bowled well in Dharamsala to start off. Especially their seamers. They set the tone, managed to get us down to four in first 10 over. What the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja have done, we are not used to in home conditions."
Boult maintained that the mood in the camp is still upbeat despite failing to register a win in the tour so far.
"Obviously it hadn't gone as we have liked it to be. It's been a tough learning experience in Test series and a severe defeat in Dharamsala, the other night. The mood in the camp is positive and guys are looking forward to the challenge. Obviously luxury, five-match series, you have four match up for grabs and opportunity to right a few wrongs," he signed off.

Delhi National Zoological Park shuts down temporarily due to bird flu

Delhi National Zoological Park shuts down temporarily due to bird flu

According to zoo sources, around 8 water birds and a few ducks and pelicans were reported to have been affected by bird flu last week.
"The zoo has been shut down until further notice. We have sent samples of a couple of dead ducks to Jalandhar and Mathura. We are awaiting the report," a zoo official said.
These cases come a nearly month after India declared itself free from the highly contagious avian influenza (H5N1) or bird flu.
The official claimed that the influenza will not affect humans and the shutting down of zoo premises was a precautionary measure.
A team of Central Zoo Authority will shortly visit the premises of the zoo which houses around 40 pelicans and 20 ducks.
The National Zoological Park has been battling with a spate of animal deaths since earlier this year. Around 46 spotted deers were found dead at its premises in January.
India had declared itself free from bird flu in September. In a statement, the Centre had also emphasised the need for "continued surveillance especially in the vulnerable areas bordering infected countries and in areas visited by migratory birds".
Bird flu affects mainly the domestic poultry.
The disease spreads from infected birds to other winged creatures through contact with nasal and respiratory secretions and also due to contamination of feed and water.

ISL 2016: Mumbai City FC coach Alexandre Guimaraes hails 'fantastic' show, despite draw

IISL 2016: Mumbai City FC coach Alexandre Guimaraes hails 'fantastic' show, despite draw

Despite squandering two goal advantages twice and ending up dropping two points, Mumbai City FC coach Alexandre Guimaraes was full of praise for his team as they moved to the second position in the table. Mumbai took a 2-0 lead courtesy Krisztian Vadocz inside 38 minutes. Richard Gadze pulled one back for Delhi early in the second half before Sony Norde restored the two-goal cushion in the 69th minute. However, Badara Badji scored for Delhi five minutes later, and with eight minutes to go, Delhi earned a controversial penalty which Marcelinho converted to script a dramatic comeback and salvage a point.
We had a fantastic game," Mumbai City FC manager Alexandre Guimaraes said at the post-match conference. "Game was good. Rival also came out to play. We are disappointed. The objective of ISL is to have game like these. Offensive and open game with 22 players putting their heart to get result. What happens sometimes happens. I am very proud of what my team is doing. We are still there on top," he added.
There was action, there were goals and there was drama and one felt that Mumbai were hard done by poor refereeing in the match.
There was a wrong offside call which resulted in Delhi pulling one back through Gadze in the 55th minute. And then a crucial, but soft penalty decision was given against them in the dying stages of the match which helped Delhi draw level and snatch two points from Mumbai. Guimaraes chose to describe his disappointment in very few words.
"I don't have a lot to say. Images show more than I can say," the Mumbai coach said.
Mumbai could have killed the match off early but for the missed chances and somewhere down the line their poor finishing proved to be crucial too.
In all, Mumbai had 16 shots in the match - seven on target and nine off it - but just three goals to show.
Mumbai coach defended the finishing saying the chances created were 50-50 and that the team was heading in the right direction.
"This is football. What's important for us is to have a system where players can express themselves. We went there to play attacking game, to create and to give the players to play their (natural) games. This is football. We had 50-50 chances today but we have to just konw that we are in the right direction," Guimaraes said at the post-match conference.
Norde was electric on the left flank and constantly gave the defenders a tough time. He deservedly got a goal in the 69th minute which restored Mumbai's two-goal lead but soon after that he was substituted. The coach was full of praise for the winger but constant travel and other injury concerns made him play safe.
"Norde is an important player. He wants to always play. We have to take care though, manage minutes. We have lost too many players to injury. He did great, he is an important player for us and he showed it today," Guimaraes said.
"He has been travelling a lot from one place to another. He went to Kerala and then came here. He started to feel a bit tired. Today there was an injury to Leo Costa, last game it was Anwar. We have to take care of our players," he added.

Midfielder Vadocz opened his account in the tournament and was the best player on the field. He was tireless and ran box-to-box, always there at the right place at the right time. He showed great positional sense and made really clever runs to score two goals. Guimaraes said that it was the intelligence of the Hungarian that stood out.
"He's been doing this since game one. He is a very intelligent player who understands the game, understands what I want from him in that role," Guimaraes told reporters. "He knows his role and he's getting better. He has the physical strength to do it. I am very pleased with his understanding of idea, there is an idea behind it," he added.
While finishing was a problem, there were some silver linings too for Mumbai as Matias Defederico, in the absence of Diego Forlan, got the much-needed support from the forwards and the midfield. Guimaraes stressed on the fact that Mumbai do need to play collectively rather than depend on one individual.
“Yes, of course I am happy. We cannot always depend on Matias Defederico to keep scoring for us. We play a creative game which creates opportunity for other players to score. It is fantastic for us,” Guimaraes said.
There was anger somewhere inside on potentially being robbed of two points but the fact that Guimaraes termed it as a fantastic performance meant that there were more positives than negatives for Mumbai from this match.

South Africa vs Australia: Usman Khawaja may open in first Test, hints coach Darren Lehmann

South Africa vs Australia: Usman Khawaja may open in first Test, hints coach Darren Lehmann

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja could find himself opening against South Africa's formidable pace attack in the first Test in Perth on November 3, just months after being dropped during a poor tour of Sri Lanka.

File photo of Usman Khawaja. Reuters
Khawaja has played most of his cricket at number three for Australia but could end up at the top of the order for the Test at the WACA after Shaun Marsh suffered a hamstring strain.
"I think you can look at him (Khawaja) as a one, two or three," Australia coach Darren Lehmann told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday. "It depends on the make-up of the side.
"At the end of the day the captain will decide where the batting order lies and we’ll just give him the side we think is the best prepared and the best team to win that particular game."
At three, Khawaja enjoyed a prolific home summer against New Zealand and West Indies, smashing a century in three Tests and adding a fourth ton on tour in New Zealand in February.
The stylish left-hander's form deserted him on the flat wickets in Sri Lanka, however, where he managed only 55 runs from four innings before being omitted for the third Test in Colombo in August.
Khawaja will hope for a good knock captaining Queensland in the final of a local one-day tournament on Sunday, having had little time out in the middle recently.
He scored an unbeaten 82 in a one-dayer against Ireland in South Africa but was unused in the ODI series against the hosts, who swept an under-strength Australia 5-0.
"I felt like I was seeing the ball well all throughout South Africa and still feel like I'm seeing the ball well," he said.
"Even in Sri Lanka where I didn't score a lot of runs, I didn't feel horrible."
He will have only a day's break before leading Queensland in the domestic Sheffield Shield, the only chance to get re-acquainted with the longer format before the Perth Test.
Khawaja questioned the scheduling of the South Africa one-day tour right before the Australian domestic summer, which will see a number of Test players scramble to compete in four different tournaments in just over three weeks.
"I found it really bizarre that we played that one-day series before a big Test series," he said.
"That's how international cricket is going these days. There is no break."

India vs New Zealand: MS Dhoni doesn't need time to settle while batting, says Anil Kumble

India vs New Zealand: MS Dhoni doesn't need time to settle while batting, says Anil Kumble

New Delhi: There has been constant debate on whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni should bat up the order with questions being raised about his ability as a finisher but coach Anil Kumble made it clear that the veteran skipper has "enough experience" and "does not need time to settle down".

File photo of India coach Anil Kumble. AFP
Asked if Dhoni would be asked to bat up the order keeping in mind India's Champions Trophy defence in UK next year, Kumble was quick to respond: "It all depends on match situations. While chasing you need more experience. As far as MS is concerned, he has enough experience. He has shown over the years that he has enough capabilities as a batsman.
"We don't need to really look at giving him time to settle in. You will probably see a different batting order depending on different situations."
While flexibility remains key for Kumble, he did say that Manish Pandey is being looked at as a potential number four due to his experience of handling pressure situations for long in domestic cricket as well as the spark that he has shown in his brief international career.
"We have a couple of options. Obviously, Manish is someone who has done really well in recent past. He started off really well in Dharamsala. It all depends on situations, may be someone else could walk up depending on whether we bat first or second. But Manish has shown a lot of promise and performance... something heartening. He has quite a bit of experience at domestic level unlike Hardik (Pandya) who is new at that level. He is certainly the number four, we are looking into."
Even as KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan's injuries have opened the doors for Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order, Kumble feels a clearer picture will emerge only after the tour of England.
"I think Rahane certainly fits in at the top of the order so that is one thing we will persist with. Yes, it does give us an option once Shikhar and Rahul are fit but will only look at that when England come for the one-dayers (in January). So it's a lot of time before the next one-day series.
"In this one-day series, definitely Rahane is going to open the batting. Looking at the Champions Trophy, we will then decide who will open the batting," said the chief coach.
He talked about how A tours act as a synergy for the senior team where some players are expected to hone specific skills before walking into the senior team's dressing room, and Pandya's bowling which is something the team is banking on.
"I think he (Hardik) is someone who gives us right balance because he can not only bowl but he bowls at a pretty decent pace. It was nice that he really bowled well in his first game with the new ball. That was certainly a strategy that MS wanted Hardik to try. And it's really heartening that he came up with the MoM award in his first game.
"So that should give him a lot of confidence. Like I mentioned, all-rounders who can run in and bowl quick and bat are certainly an asset and he is someone we will closely monitor and see how he progresses. We will expect Hardik to give us that seven-eight or ten overs which certainly gives us a better balance in the team," Kumble explained.
However, the coach is not ready to put pressure on Hardik, the batsman.
"Someone who is just starting his international career we do not want to put pressure on him by giving him definite plans of what is expected of him. He is someone who likes the freedom and that's exactly what we have given someone like Hardik. We don't want to burden the younger player, who is coming in, and suggest that this is what is expected of you.
"Because the moment you start putting pressure and tell that you bowl six deliveries in one spot, it doesn't work that way in international cricket. Even with his batting, he has all the freedom, doesn't really matter what the situation is."
For Kumble, there must have been a sense of deja vu as he entered Feroz Shah Kotla, a venue where he got his historic 'Perfect Ten' and also bid adieu to international cricket.
"I like coming to Kotla. If you are a player and performed here, then you certainly bring that confidence with you and come with the same hope, keeping the record in mind," said Kumble.

Delhi court dismisses fake degree complaint against Smriti Irani, says it was filed to 'harrass' her

Delhi court dismisses fake degree complaint against Smriti Irani, says it was filed to 'harrass' her
New Delhi: In a relief to Smriti Irani, a Delhi court on Tuesday dismissed a complaint against her for allegedly giving false information on her educational qualification to the Election Commission, saying it was filed to "needlessly harass" her as she was a union minister.
Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh said there was a "great delay of around 11 years" in filing the complaint as it rejected the plea to summon her as an accused. "Therefore, prayer for summoning the proposed accused (Irani) is hearby declined," the court said while pronouncing the order.
In his complaint, freelance writer Ahmer Khan had alleged that Irani, now Textiles Minister, had deliberately given discrepant information about her educational qualifications in affidavits filed before the Election Commission in 2004, 2011 and 2014 and not given any clarification, despite concerns raised on the issue. He had urged the court to take cognisance of the offences alleged in the plea under Section 125A of the RPA and "summon the accused person, Smriti Z Irani, for trial".
"After conducting trial hold the accused guilty, convict and sentence the accused person in accordance with law, in the interest of justice to the complainant and also the public at large", he had prayed.
The complainant had earlier claimed in court that in her affidavit for April 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Irani had said she completed her BA in 1996 from DU(School of Correspondence), whereas in another affidavit of 11 July, 2011 to contest Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat, she had said her highest educational qualification was BCom Part I from the School of Correspondence, DU. In the affidavit filed for nomination of 16 April, 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Irani said she had completed Bachelor of Commerce Part-I from School of Open Learning, DU. A poll panel official had earlier told the court that the documents filed by Irani regarding her academic qualification while filing nominations were not traceable. However, the information on this was available on its website, he had said.
The court, while declining the prayer, said the original evidence was already lost due to passage of several years and the court needed to be "relieved of the burden of adjudicating such inconsequential claim or case". It said the fate of the case could be foreseen as inevitable failure as original evidence was lost due to the "great delay" and the complainant may not have even bothered to file the plea if Irani was not a central minister.
"So, where the original evidence has already been lost due to passage of number of years, the secondary evidence available will probably be not able to withstand the test of judicial scrutiny, there is great great delay of around 11 years in filing of the complaint...The said delay could not be condoned as complainant is not an aggrieved person, the complaint does not appear to have been filed for vindication of majesty of justice and maintenance of law and order, the complaint appears to have been filed to needlessly harass the proposed accused," the magistrate said.
Section 125A of RPA deals with penalty for filing false affidavit and entails a jail term of up to six months or fine or both. The court said the alleged offence under the IPC entailed a maximum punishment of three years for which the limitation for filing the complaint was three years under the CrPC.
The court had on 20 November last year allowed the complainant's plea seeking direction to the officials of EC and DU to bring the records of Irani's qualifications after he said he was unable to place them before the court. In pursuance to the court's earlier direction, Delhi University had also submitted that the documents pertaining to Irani's BA course in 1996, as purportedly mentioned by her in an affidavit filed during 2004 Lok Sabha elections, were yet to be found.
Khan had alleged that Irani had knowingly furnished misleading information about her qualifications and that a candidate, deliberately giving incorrect details, could be punished under provisions of the IPC and under section 125A of the Representation of the People Act (RPA).
